I think as the time goes by Marlow tries to understand himself, seems like he is going deeper and deeper not to the unknown land, but to the deepest and darkest parts of his mind.
For him Mr. Kurtz can become like an ideal, like the embodiment of desires that he will not be able to fulfill ever. We see in this part that deep part of people’s soul is becoming like a stone or ice. Removed from the comforts of civilization, stripped of acquisitions and principles, only a deliberate belief will serve the individual.
In Heart of Darkness, Conrad employs different types of irony. Simply put, verbal irony is saying one thing and meaning another.
