The more you read the more you start to understand the hopelessness of these people. The heart of darkness is a trip to the deepest part of the king’s of demons, which is underlined as the best agent of the company, Kurtz.
In the trip along the river we can see the trip into you and by means of the “heart of darkness” we can outline the personal subconscious. I think as the time goes by Marlow tries to understand himself, seems like he is going deeper and deeper not to the unknown land, but to the deepest and darkest parts of his mind.
For him Mr. Kurtz can become like an ideal, like the embodiment of desires that he will not be able to fulfill ever. We see in this part that deep part of people’s soul is becoming like a stone or ice. Removed from the comforts of civilization, stripped of acquisitions and principles, only a deliberate belief will serve the individual.
In Heart of Darkness, Conrad employs different types of irony. Simply put, verbal irony is saying one thing and meaning another.0100
