Why did stagecraft develop to such a level in Japan? At the risk of oversimplification, I would say it was because Japan is a country where the exterior is more often valued over the interior.

The Japanese have always tended to treat foreigners like creatures from another universe. As Japan has become more internationalized, the attitude towards foreigners has grown more, rather than less, complicated.

Япония подобна устрице. Устрицы не любят инородные объекты: когда даже малейшая крупица попадает в раковину, устрица находит такое вторжение невыносимым и слой за слоем покрывает ее перламутром, в итоге создавая прекрасную жемчужину. Тем не менее, несмотря на то что жемчужины отличаются по размеру и блеску, они выглядят очень похоже. В процессе покрытия инородного тела перламутром, от его изначальной формы и цвета не остается и следа. Подобным образом Япония покрывает любую культуру, пришедшую из-за границы, превращая ее в японскую жемчужину. Готовая жемчужина представляет собой предмет необычайной красоты - зачастую, как в случае с чайной церемонией, более совершенный, чем изначально - но природа подлинного образца утеряна.

When the native culture of a country has been lost, a ‘new traditional culture’ is created. This develops as a mix of ancient forms and modern tastes, and ends up a cultural Frankenstein’s monster.

David taught me an important lesson that I would never have heard from art historians and curators: beauty comes first. ‘It should be old, it should be valuable,’ he said. ‘But first ask yourself, “Is it beautiful?” ’
‘How can I know if a new thing I have bought is beautiful, or if I have simply become carried away?’ I asked.
He answered, ‘There are two ways. One is to have a beautiful house. The other is to surround the new thing with beautiful things. If it’s not right, they will reject it.’
