In 1891, after founding the Kelmscott Press with Emery Walker, Morris decided to issue a new volume of poetry, his first since 1876, to be published by the new press. The modesty casual title, Poems By the Way, reflected the fact that he had first drafted a number of its poems around 1870 or shortly hereafter.
