Turkish Gambit
Turkish Gambit is written by Boris Akunin. Boris Akunin is a russian detective and historical fiction writer, also the author of “The Winter of Queen” (1998). He is also a winner of “Smirnoff-Booker Prize” (2000), “Antibooker” (2000), “Dagger Award in Fiction” (2003). He enjoys working with historical materials. He is known as a translator too. He got in the historical-philological branch of the Institute of Asian and African Countries of Moscow State University as an expert on Japan. The Turkish Gambit, which is his work, was following a one narrative line.
It is seen that book followed one narrative line in a broad history. For example, other diplomatic relations of Russia and Turkey were not shown. Only thing was adapted to story was a detective history about Erast Fandorin and how he exposed Turkish so-called “V. I. P. person”, who was pretending as a Russian captain. But, it is acceptable for books to follow one line, as long as we cannot write everything on a book, also we do not want to read so many informations from a book. Fandorin is the main character of this book.
Fandorin in the book is an interesting, a kind of universal detective. He seems to do not like war and he also did not like when Russia won in the war. But, it seems he does not know what he wants and he is not doing an objective, ambitious in terms of his life. However, he comes with an important confidential emergency message to the main headquarter of a russian division. In the road he met Varvara Andreevna who was the main character from the beginning of the book and who was going to Russian army division to meet her sweetheart, who is Petya Yablokov.
Peter Yablokov was a cryptographer of a general headquarter. As was noticed in the book, Varavara liked Petya because he was like Lermontov and he did not run after Varvara like other men. But, we should talk about Fandorin, specifically about his emergency message, as long as this in some sense this message decides Peter’s life.
As long as Fandorin comes to his people, he informs general Sobolev about tricky flange maneuver that was conceived by Turks. From Fandorin’s information it is known that Russians have to quickly take Plevna, otherwise Osman-Pasha army division is coming to Plevna. There was a turkish spy, who acted professionally in Russian division, who is Anvar-afendi.
Anvar-afendi is a secretary of sultan Abdul-Gamid. This interesting turk personally leads secret operations against russians. He is desperate and adventurer. He could be in russian division and stand on “his position” thanks to his european appearance and fluent knowledge of many languages. One of his beginning interesting operations in Russian divios is changing cryptography.
So, somebody changes cryptography code written by Peter from “Pelevna” to “Nikopol”. Peter was in shock and does not know how 6 digit code became an 8 digit code. Peter was arrested because of his incorrect cryptography work. Varvara begs Fandorin to help Peter. It was just necessary to find out who changed the code. There were some people who were suspicious spies. A french reporter, Evre might be suspicious, as long as he is not a russian.
Evre could be one of the people who were suspicious in turkish espionage. But, he was not seem that kind of dangerous as long as his actions were clear. Evre is handsome seductive french reporter. He is one of the interesting man in Varvara’s eyes. Only person, in Fandorin’s eyes in the end who is suspicious becomes russian captain pretender, who is Anvar-afendi.Therefore, it seems like, Anvar-afendi changed this code who was unhindered acting in a Russian division.
