The House of the Spirits
Isabel Allende

I decided to revisit this book, because I think I didn't do it justice the first time around. Sometimes in a rush to finish a book, to swallow it in one bite when I like it too much, I don't stop to notice the small details. I was right. I did miss a lot. Wouldn't wan't to spoil anything for those, who are about to discover her for the first time.
Allende is one of those authors, who elevates the simplest things to the rung of the extraordinary and speaks of the most unusual things as if they are just around the corner. If it were someone else, they'd probably want to soak you in despair, wanting to squeeze out as many tears as possible. But Allende... Allende is different. She wants you to know. She wants you to see. She doesn't want her readers to feel sorry for her and her people, she just wants us to know that it can happen to anybody. Yes, even to us.
Not once does she mention the name of the country in her book, but you'd be blind not to understand that one can know so much only of her own country. She speaks of the formation of the junta after the short-lived Communist state was sabotaged. She speaks of the poorest of the poor and the richest of the rich. Sometimes what she describes is so outrageous that you can't help feeling disgusted at the stupidity and blindness of people. But then... She makes it easier for you as she preaches the oldest of the truths. This too shall pass. And no matter what, you can endure it. The sun will shine the next morning. It always does.
It is always very difficult for me to write about my favorite books. I am somewhat scared that I won't do it justice, that I'll let it down. I am rarely impressed by a book this much.
