This was good. Seemed to me more similar to the older Grisham books I liked than most of his newer stuff.

The methodical structure - the crime and its circumstances > build up for the trial > the trial > the aftermath - is done very well here and it combines well with the similarly methodical writing.

The case is an interesting one - similar to A Time to Kill, the suspect did, in fact, do the deed (this is not a spoiler, you find it out very early at the beginning of the book), but there are lots of circumstances that make it not straightforward, emotionally charged, and somewhat controversial.

The book is a bit too repetitive, we hear multiple times about Jake not wanting the case, the victim being a good cop but an abusive boyfriend, etc. Jake is also a bit of a goody two-shoes, even if he bends the rules it’s for the good of his clients - and I get that it’s the kind of a lawyer defendants like that would want, but sometimes he reads as a bit too idealised.

I also thought the percentage of actual courtroom drama was a bit too low for my liking and the ending was a tiny bit underwhelming.

But overall it was a good read, with decent suspense and pacing and a thought-provoking case.
