Tempest-Tost
Robertson Davies
Аноним5 июля 2014 г.It is very hard to give an appraisal of this novel. It started a bit too slow and even boring. I wanted to give maximum 4 stars mark. And it was with the regard for it is the first important thing created by lovely Davies, almost first attempt at writing. But then I read what I've expected to read. That was Davies's own style what I love so much. It has almost such level as in my fav book of him "The Rebel Angels" in spite of 30 years difference in time of writing these two novels. Davies always choose some piece of art as the background of his plots. Here it was "The Tempest" by Shakespeare. And all of his books are full of philosophy of life. Here it is as usual. I think that Hector Mackilwraith of "Tempest-Tost" was someone like prototype of Simon Darkourt of "The Rebel Angels". Simon wouldn't try to do something so awful like Hector did but they have the same problems, the same temper and almost the same look. I agree with Cobbler that he did that because this passion is the last flesh in his life like a man, his last love. And that act will make him to go out from a small city where people know everything about each other and like to spread gossip.
In conclusion I would say that only Davies can make a masterpiece from such a standard plot. Of course I'll go on to read "The Salterton Trilogy".
