The idea of Guirlanda comes from the Mattotti notebooks. He began to design strange, bearded characters and, thinking about how to develop them, came to Moomins, the well-known, small hippopotamus-trolls of the Finnish artist Tove Jansson. Moomins are a great love to his friend and partner, Jerry Kramsky, so both of them were inspired by the simplicity, calmness and naivety of Jansson's wonderful stories about their adventures.
Guirlanda is light and dark, carefree as well as philosophical, funny and serious story that combines Homer's Odyssey with Moomins. Narrated by the unmistakable craftsmanship of the waved, "shaky" lines of Mattotti, this work of his mature career seems more free than ever!
It could even be seen as a political project because it talks about the city, community life and its defects. Denial of diversity, superstitions and hasty judgments often lead people to act against themselves. And imagination, magic, exotic worlds and their search are all antidotes to obscurantism and intolerance.
