И снова любимые сборники страшных историй. Но, к сожалению, перед Лавкрафтом и По Стивен Кинг для меня блекнет. Несколько историй заставили мое сердце затрепетать, но общей атмосфера я не почувствовала. Пройдусь по любимчикам.
Долгий Джонт – история из разряда космической фантастики в далеком(а может и не очень) будущем. Джонт-рейсы позволяют перемещать людей и грузы на самые дальние расстояния с условием, что живой объект будет в бессознательном состоянии. Нашелся любопытный мальчишка, который решает притворится, что уснул, чтобы узнать, а что скрывает путешествие от людских глаз. Своего он добился. Здесь сыграно на нашем понимании того, что существует нечто за гранью нашего понимания и мы никогда это не постигнем.
Пляж – история немного странная, плохо понятная, но Кинг очень тонко описал постепенно сходящего с ума человека. Отчаяние, безумие, абсурд – все здесь. Очень жестоко и грязно.
Тот, кто хочет выжить – еще одна похожая по ощущениям история. Герой думает, что держит все под контролем, логически объясняет свои действия. Грань отчаяния, на которой он находится, заставляет оставаться в напряжении. Он, наверное, так до конца и не понял …
Бабуля – а вот эта история забавная получилась. Нет, она по идее страшная, но читать было весело. С внуком наедине в доме умирает бабка, а тут она вроде и ведьмой оказалась и понеслась чертовщина всякая. Я бы фильмец глянула.
Все же, у Кинга предпочитаю более крупные произведения, рассказы не особо зашли.
Посоветую на один раз, для разнообразия.

And yet at times I am querying why would Stephen King go on and on about stuff like land ownership backlog, business transaction history, loan agreement details, and shopping lists.

But while I was reading the "Uncle Otto's Truck" story, it clicked for me. This story is pretty heavy with business talk and it makes up for more than a third of the entire narrative. So, why tell the story of business and property in so much detail? Well, because it's ... American. It is so very American. And yes, it sounds dull and obvious. But the culture gap has never been so exposed to me until I understood why King often writes like this. People born and raised in the U.S. would rarely flinch at stuff like this, I imagine: "Well, duh! No shit!". But I was amazed nonetheless. It is one thing to be throwing around a cliché or two when thinking of an American character or setting. It is an altogether another thing when you read how the writer describes an American character or setting and you smash into a culture barrier that feels as real as a brick wall.
