It is my contention that in order to Keep a Muse, you must first offer food. How you can feed something that isn't yet there is a little hard to explain. But we live surrounded by paradoxes. One more shouldn't hurt us.

HOW TO KEEP AND FEED A MUSE
It isn't easy. Nobody has ever done it consistently. Those who try hardest, scare it off into the woods. Those who turn their backs and saunter along, whistling softly between their teeth, hear it treading quietly behind them, lured by a carefully acquired disdain. We are of course speaking of The Muse.

Если ты не работаешь, ты перестаешь развиваться, ты зажимаешься, становишься нервным и раздражительным и, таким образом, разрушаешь весь творческий процесс.

Помните: сюжет — это не более чем следы, оставшиеся на снегу после того, как ваши персонажи промчались по нему на пути к невероятным целям. Сюжет следует обозревать уже задним числом, а не загодя. Он не может предшествовать действию. Это схема, которая остается, когда действие завершается. Ничем другим сюжет быть не может. Это человеческое устремление: гнать, бежать, достигать цели. Оно не может быть механическим. Оно может быть лишь динамическим.
Так что отойдите в сторонку, забудьте о мишенях и дайте волю персонажам, дайте волю своим пальцам, телу, крови.
Дайте им делать дело.

During these years, Henry Kuttner, along with Leigh, was my teacher. He suggested authors—Katherine Anne Porter, John Collier, Eudora Welty—and books—The Lost Weekend, One Man's Meat, Rain in the Doorway—to be read and learned from. Along the way, he gave me a copy of Winesburg, Ohio, by Sherwood Anderson. Finishing the book, I said to myself, "Someday I would like to write a novel laid on the planet Mars, with somewhat similar people."
