Вы только подумайте. Она встает при свечах, когда еще темно, делает уборку, идет на рынок в любую погоду, когда клерки еще не появились в Инне, готовит из самых дешевых продуктов вкусный обед, печет пудинги и пироги, наводит повсюду порядок, заботится о своей внешности, сидит со мной по вечерам, как бы это ни было поздно, всегда бодрая, всегда в хорошем расположении духа. И все это ради меня.

Общество молодых девушек, знаете ли, Копперфилд, – замечательная вещь. Оно не совсем согласуется с моей профессией, но все же это замечательная вещь.

I was stronger than ever in those tremendous practical resolutions that I felt the crisis required. I continued to walk extremely fast, and to have a general idea that I was getting on. I made it a rule to take as much out of myself as I possibly could, in my way of doing everything to which I applied my energies. I made a perfect victim of myself. I even entertained some idea of putting myself on a vegetable diet, vaguely conceiving that, in becoming a graminivorous animal, I should sacrifice to Dora.

After laying his head on the desk for a little while, he would cheer up, somehow, begin to laugh again, and draw skeletons all over his slate, before his eyes were dry. I used at first to wonder what comfort Traddles found in drawing skeletons; and for some time looked upon him as a sort of hermit, who reminded himself by those symbols of mortality that caning couldn't last for ever. From that blessed little room, Roderick Random, Peregrine Pickle, Humphrey Clinker, Tom Jones, the Vicar of Wakefield, Don Quixote, Gil Blas, and Robinson Crusoe, came out, a glorious host, to keep me company. They kept alive my fancy, and my hope of something beyond that place and time, - they, and the Arabian Nights, and the Tales of the Genii, - and did me no harm; for whatever harm was in some of them was not there for me; I knew nothing of it.
