anastasia_dv4 февраля 2013 г.

This story is about one person, Rosemary Fell, who thought that she wanted to help a poor young girl. Actually, she wasn’t so in reality but she was acting the role of a generous person.
In the introduction there is a description of Rosemary. The author used a lot of epithets such as young, brilliant, extremely modern, exquisitely well dressed, amazingly well read. At the same time the writer tells us that she was not exactly beautiful. As it seems neither in her appearance, nor in her intentions. There are interrogative questions. The author used them in order to impose author’s own point of view and to interest reader in Rosemary’s personality.
There are detailed picture of Rosemary’s life. Also we can observe the description of Rosemary’s perception of the world. There is she, beautiful and rich on the one side and things on the other side (it doesn’t matter whether they are people or just items). For example: when she says: I want those and those and those. Of cause it is not about people but even buying something she’s negligent. Or for example: That jar of roses. The usage of the pronoun that speaks about it expressively, or she had been buying something. She used to get or buying something. And she really gets used that everyone admires her:
He clasped his hands; he was so gratified he could sparsely speak.Next paragraph begins with the sentence: Today it was a little box. It seems that she bought something everyday and finally these things lost any value for her. The main idea of this story is that she loved not the things or people, she loved herself. Important part of Rosemary character was a tendency to imagine. For example:
in some dim cavern of his mind may have dared to think so too. When she hadn’t bought anything, the day seemed to be lost:
Lighted lamps looked sad. Sad were the lights in the houses opposite. The conflict of this story is between two social classes. The homeless girl, who happened to meet Rosemary, described with the help of epithets, which are opposite to the description of Rosemary: thin, dark, shadowy.
To express that Rosemary was surprised, the writer used exclamatory sentences: How extraordinary! For Rosemary it’s really impossible that someone had no money. She couldn’t imagine it. In the following sentence there is a real conception of Rosemary about this girl:
And suddenly it seemed to Rosemary such an adventure. It was like a game for her. She didn’t treat the situation seriously. And again she imagined the picture:
And she heard herself saying afterwards to the amazement of her friends: I simply took her home with me.She thought how her friend would consider this action, not about the girl:
And she felt how simple and kind her smile was.She enjoyed being so kind, but it was like a role. Once she said an interesting thing: to please me. The girl must have made Rosemary glad, cheer her up so to say. Rosemary said that the girl shouldn’t be afraid of her because they were both women, that women were sisters. I think this idea is the most improbable. The author through this episode expressed irony towards women friendship.
In the next paragraph it’s said that Rosemary was longing to begin to be generous. It sounds as Rosemary couldn’t be kind all the time.
The description of Rosemary’s room expressed how beautiful she was in comparison with the other people: beautiful big bedroom, wonderful lacquer furniture.
This girl was like a toy for Rosemary. She took the girl to the home and didn’t know what to do further:
And what was she to do with the coat now?Rosemary couldn’t imagine what the girl wanted and offered her some brandy.
There is description of how the girl changed after the mea:
a new being, a light frail creature with tangled hair, was strangely still and unafraid.Speaking to her husband Rosemary said that she picked up the girl. Than suddenly her husband changed the point of the discussion and said that the girl was astonishingly pretty and lovely. I thought that it’s a climax, because in this moment Rosemary seemed to open her eyes on the whole situation. I suppose Rosemary’s husband had said it in order to make her jealous. Some time later Rosemary even forgot about the girl.
The resolution is quit clear. Rosemary got rid of the girl and returned to the more important things in her life to buy different stuff.31,6K
