This was a rollercoaster for me.
At first, I enjoyed reading about the MC being snarky and miserable in the office amongst awful colleagues. The idea of her getting access to all those people’s emails seemed intriguing. And then the cringe hit.
I can usually tolerate awkward moments in books or movies fairly well, but this book is so full of them, and some are so melodramatically awful that it was physically painful to read.
Then it was revealed that a lot of it is actually about grief and guilt and how it can mess you up for years and years to come, and this part got to me.
However, the backstory was really vague and the friend who died didn’t really feel like a real person. Also, the way this backstory was revealed as if in a thriller, trying to build suspense for some reason by doling it out in bits and keeping part of it a mystery for a large part of the book felt jarring and unnecessary.
And so it went, from good to bad to good to bad. The romance part was meh.
Overall, the book is too dark to be truly feel-good, and too feel-goody to be truly deep, but there are some good moments there if you can handle the cringe.
