The address I wanted had a noticeably grander flight of stairs than its neighbours, leading to double mahogany doors with brass fittings. Carved above the lintel were the words SCIENTIA POTESTAS EST.
Science points east, I wondered? Science is portentous, yes? Science protests too much. Scientific potatoes rule. Had I stumbled on the lair of dangerous plant geneticists?

‘His parents are flying in tomorrow,’ said Dr Walid. ‘Is it all right if I sew his face back together?’

She had the startled-rabbit look that civilians get after five minutes of helping the police with their inquiries. If they stay calm for too long it’s a sign that they’re professional villains or foreign or just plain stupid. All of which can get you locked up if you’re not careful. If you find yourself talking to the police, my advice is to stay calm but look guilty; it’s your safest bet.

Главные плюсы общежития - дешевизна, близость к работе и то, что живешь отдельно от родителей. А минусы в том, что под одной крышей с вами обитают субъекты, слабо приспособленные к жизни в обществе и не умеющие сосуществовать с нормальными людьми.

Май начался с банковских каникул с их типичной погодой: два дня лило и еще три моросило. И только воскресное утро выдалось ясным и теплым. Именно в такую погоду молодежь тянет на романтику, мороженое и пьесы о Панче и Джуди.
