I had three false starts with this one. Dunno why but reading the first 50 pages was quite a challenge, I just couldn't get into the book, the story didn't make any sense. On my third try I made a bet with myself to struggle up to page 65 (at school they used to tell us to give a book 55 pages - if nothing somewhat exciting happens by then - nothing else probably will. I was being generous and added another 10). I remember still hating it on page 48, but a bet is a bet, so I kept reading and... finished the entire thing in like 3 hours. Somehow action picks up, the characters get interesting to follow, you find yourself in the middle of a twisted love story where a girl is the girl and someone else at the same time and I just really wanted to know more! And, to be honest, that's all we can really ask from a YA novel. I never expect some deep meaning from these books. I like them for absolutely different reasons than I like my classics. These books are usually a very easy read with a captivating plot, decent language and prepossessing characters. For me The Host checks off all three.
