This was better than the previous book but still overall just mostly okay.

I kind of liked the plot revolving around Dark Island and its owner and the fight for its future.

But the rest… I just don’t know why that story had to be told through those particular characters. Mercer from book one was useless in book two where she just read a book and is barely more than that here as she reads a book and writes one. Wow. She does kind of launch the whole thing but then mostly has nothing to do with the plot and is barely present. The parts where she’s flirting with her husband or where they are painting their house or talking about it or something were barely tolerable.

For some reason, there’s a lot of recapping book one again and we are reminded a few more times that Mercer and Bruce slept together. Because that matters why?

We also get a lot of gossip and recaps of the lives of characters who are here from book one but have nothing to do with the plot of this one. I guess if you liked that cast of characters it would be nice to catch up but none of the books made me care for any of them.

I honestly wish the island plot would have been a separate book.
