A lot of time is spent on describing and building up things that have nothing to do with the main plot and don’t really add anything meaningful.
A bunch of characters are reintroduced, we get glimpses into their lives - and then they leave because of the hurricane and play no part in the story. The plot of the previous book is recapped several times, only to have the MC from that story … read a book and comment on it, she doesn’t do anything else meaningful.
The mystery is meh. It has an interesting beginning, kinda - a murder staged as to appear a hurricane induced accident. But: everyone immediately sees that it’s murder, there’s no suspense whatsoever; the victim has written a book basically answering the question why he was killed; the investigation moves quite fast with too many things happening too conveniently.
It was interesting to read about the island preparing for the hurricane and dealing with its aftermath, but there wasn’t much of it, and it was buried in descriptions of food, antique furniture, open marriages, and, overall, characters I didn’t care about whatsoever.
I was thoroughly bored, and finished it mostly because it was an audiobook and I had chores to do. I’ll probably still read book three because there’s just one left, and I’ve done two already, I might as well complete the trilogy.
