I can’t say it was a bad book, but it wasn’t that great either, and I also just struggled to connect with any of it, good or bad.

The thriller part was rather underwhelming. The POV of the girl in the basement was supposed to be scary and suspenseful, but it didn’t feel so to me. It was one of those things where you understand that the thing being described is bad but just because, say, murder or abuse is bad, but the writing doesn’t really elicit any emotions. This POV also didn’t really develop the story much, and I even think it would’ve been better if we knew less about her, making her fate more ambiguous and her appearance at the end more surprising.

Heather’s POV was not thrilling at all. It reads as not even YA but maybe like a book for teenagers or, sometimes, even kids, despite some of the heavier topics. It has a decent coming of age component, all the I’m not a girl not yet a woman, girls having to deal not just with growing up but with all the male bullshit, and the MC having to deal with complex family dynamics and her friends growing up a bit faster than her on top of that. It was good, if not overwhelmingly so, but for me it also clashed with the thrillery parts of the story.

Overall, it seemed a mostly okay read, which, however, completely failed to make me emotionally invested in any way.
