How many POVs are too many POVs? Because this book has all of them, and while I kind of see what the author was going for - it didn’t work for me.

Each chapter in this book is from a new character’s POV. We get their backstories, how each of them came to be on this ship, and them in the present. Through their stories we also get bits of the plot.

    But.

The POVs do not fit together well. They feel more like a collection of short stories, and not a good one. The glimpses of the overarching plot are so tiny that it feels like the plot is barely there or not there at all. The overarching plot is also very stereotypical, all the rich are rich and powerful bastards, the poor are suffering, etc. Nothing wrong with this type of story, but there was barely any here with nothing interesting added to it.

We spend too much time in the flashbacks. It’s a relatively short book, and we spend a large portion of it building up the world that barely has any impact on the story and revealing backstories of people that barely do anything meaningful.

The setting is rather meh. It doesn’t feel special, unique, or sci-fi-like in any way. Might have just as well been a regular hotel or a cruise ship.

There is the subplot with the code that’s kind of interesting, could have been a great side-quest or a cool separate short story, but it was also smeared across several POVs and underdeveloped.

Overall, for me it didn’t go beyond “look at this random diverse cast of characters on this meh hotel-ship”.
