A Master of Djinn
Ф. Джели Кларк
Jocelyn_Phoenix2 февраля 2026I quite enjoyed this book.
It has amazing world-building, quite a unique and imaginative mix of Egyptian setting, steampunk, and magic. It also blends these well with such issues as anti-colonialism, women’s rights, and racism.
But sometimes it is a bit too much. There are lots of magical creatures and artefacts and machines mixed with magic, some mentioned in passing, some played significant roles, but how things fit together is mostly under-explained and results in a bit of a cacophony. We also get religion and gods piled on top, and international politics, and hints of other creatures and magics in other countries.
The pacing and plot are kind of uneven, the switch from a slowish murder mystery to a whirlwind pace of an epic battle for the fate of the world is kind of abrupt. There also not much proper investigating and a lot of running around.
Having said that, it’s a very colorful fun-to-be-in world, the plot is decent, and the ending is epic, so I had a really good time with the book.4 понравилось
