Circe

I’ve been wanting to read something that was like the Greek mythology retellings I read as a kid but more adult and slightly more “novel-like”, and this book is a perfect fit.
I actually like that the main character of the book is a minor deity, kind of on the outskirts of “the main events”. On the one hand, the story seems to be more grounded that way, slightly removed from all the Olympian melodrama. On the other hand, we get “cameos” and stories with in the story that keep the book firmly within its mythology.
Circe is a surprisingly active character for someone who has been exiled to an island and cannot leave - not in the moving around sense, but when it comes to making decisions and choices, standing up for herself, not fully bending to her circumstances but making them her own.
Overall, a great thought-provoking and emotional in a good way read.3 понравилось
