I guess there is such a thing as too many twists, after all.

I get why this book has high marks and how it can be entertaining. Maybe if I was reading it in a different mood or at a different time I’d have given it more stars.

The book is unhinged and messy, which can be fun, but I guess I didn’t vibe with it, and without that…

I really disliked the supernatural element in the book. It’s used as a tool to reveal some information and to move the plot along and feels just like that - a tool. And for me personally, standalone elements like this in an otherwise reality-based book feel jarring.

All the messiness in the book can be kind of entertaining and inventive, but everyone being basically horrible, people murdering one another willy-nilly, and every character trying to out-horrible all the others gets kind of tiring and blends together. Like, if everything and everyone is messy, there is nothing for the mess to stand out from.

The second half or so of the book is basically twist upon twist upon twist. Some are predictable, some are fun, some are ridiculous. But one of the fun things about twists is that they up-end your understanding of the established story - and there is no time for anything, to be established, it’s just all twists and it it’s kind of dizzying.

Overall, I didn’t hate it, I was mostly just thoroughly annoyed, but I get how this can be a fun mess if you vibe with it.
