It was almost a 4 star read for me but things fell apart at the end.
I liked the premise and the modern take on The Turning of the Screw. Little kids and smart homes don’t sound too scary but most of the book is written well, and the small things add up to a deliciously unsettling atmosphere. The suspense was built well, keeping me reading and wanting to find out what exactly is going on. The pacing is kind of slow but worked well for me - for most of the book - for this kind of story and atmosphere.
But then the twists and reveals started coming and I didn’t really like them. The twist regarding Rowan’s dad felt mostly unnecessary. The reveals of the culprit behind all the smart house creepiness and the murderer felt underwhelming. The red herrings were mostly dismissed with “oh, yeah, it wasn’t them”. What happened to Rowan in the end was confusing but if what I think happened did happen it feels kind of undeserved - or underdeveloped or insufficiently built up for or something.
In fact, most of those plot points weren’t bad per se, but the last 20% or so of the book felt very rushed and underdeveloped, just piling reveals upon each other haphazardly.
Overall, a great start with a thoroughly underwhelming ending, but I did have a good time with a large part of the book, so there’s that, I guess.
