A good take on the “some old bones are found, let’s see what story they can tell” trope.

The detective’s character and story are quite compelling. I mostly liked how the whole mystery was put together, with all the red herrings that are also kind of not. The book also deals well with ambiguous loss and the difficulty of grieving a missing person but also still hoping. There wasn’t much forensic stuff, but I enjoyed it.

I didn’t enjoy the Shoreview Six’s (or whatever they are called) POVs - there are too many and they are mostly running around worrying about being discovered. Yes, they play a large part in the story, but their POVs specifically were repetitive and dragged a lot.

A good read, overall, if you can say that about a book with such a brutal ending.
