Jocelyn_Phoenix7 августа 2025I loved the idea but it ultimately felt underdone.
The games are neither too serious and brutal nor over-the-top and ridiculous. They are kind of realistic I guess, the way games organised by teenagers in secret would probably happen, but they are not written in a way that is compelling.
I kind of liked some of the non-game segments, Heather working on the farm, her relationship with her sister. But the game and non-game parts felt kind of separate from each other. Like, they didn't contrast with each other or complement each other, they just felt like two separate stories.
The writing is not bad, it's just... I don't know, it feels as if it was heavily censored or edited to be as PG as possible or maybe the author wanted to make it as feel-good as a book about dangerous games can be: any deaths or even people getting hurt happen "off-screen", no one faces any concequences for anything, if there is conflict it feels manufactured to pad the page count and also kind of obligatory (characters realize they are in love - second act conflict - third act resolution and HEA), etc. I get that this is YA but it feels like it is written for an audience younger than its protagonists.
Overall, it's an ok read and there are a couple of thrills and heart-felt moments, but nothing that was really impressive or compelling.
