I read Emma twice—first in high school and now again. I thought I had underestimated it, but after rereading, I realized my first impression was mostly correct. The book is interesting and well-written, but not my favorite from Austen.
The Main Character
Emma Woodhouse is rich, beautiful, and very confident. She thinks she is a great matchmaker and wants to arrange perfect marriages for her friends. But Emma has a big problem—she believes she is always right. She also does not listen carefully to others. She thinks she understands people well, but in reality, she often makes mistakes. She learns her lessons only after making many wrong decisions.
Her friend Mr. Knightley often tells her when she is wrong. He tries to help her see her mistakes. Emma is a strong and independent woman, but the book also shows how limited women’s choices were in that time. At the beginning of the book, Emma says she does not want to marry because she has enough money. But in the end, she still gets married, because for women, marriage was often the safest option.
The Love Story
One thing I didn’t like was Emma’s romance with Mr. Knightley. He is much older than her, and I saw him more as a father or older brother. I think they should have stayed just friends. Also, in the end, Emma believes that Mr. Knightley knows better than her. Instead of becoming more independent, she starts depending on his opinion. This made me feel disappointed because I wanted to see her grow as a person. But I still hope that after marriage, she will continue to learn and change.
Final Thoughts
Even with these problems, I still enjoyed the book. I liked how Mr. Knightley loved Emma even with all her flaws. My favorite quote is: “She was faultless in spite of all her faults.” It is beautiful to be loved for who you really are.
Emma is not my favorite book by Jane Austen, but it is still a great story.
