A Profound Exploration of Love and Relationships

"Ghosts" by Dolly Alderton is a book that defies expectations. When I began reading it, I assumed it would be just another romcom, but it turned out to be so much more profound and thought-provoking. However, reading it at the age of 20 felt a little strange for me. The author delves into many topics that I hadn't yet considered or felt ready to fully grasp. I believe I might want to reread this book when the right time comes.

The story revolves around Nina George Dean, a 32-year-old single food writer living in London, witnessing her friends settling down and starting families. Despite having a more feminist mindset and not needing a man to complete her, Nina still yearns for her own family and someone to love. She meets Max through an online dating app, and they start dating. However, after Max says those three magical words, "I love you," he mysteriously disappears and stops responding to her messages and calls.

The concept of "ghosts" in the book is fascinating. They are vibrant and magnified versions of the people we knew. Our memories tend to amplify their positive qualities, and we hold on to these memories dearly, cherishing these ghosts.

I found Nina's character to be very likable and relatable. She felt like an old friend with whom you're instantly comfortable. Nina's maturity and wise thoughts make her a compelling protagonist. Throughout the story, she grapples with various ghosts in her life – from the disappeared boyfriend to the friend who grows apart from her after marriage, and her father who is diagnosed with dementia. The author skillfully portrays Nina's complex relationships with her parents and depicts how friendships can change as life takes different turns.

In general, I enjoyed "Ghosts" and could see myself rereading it at a later stage in life when its themes become more relatable to my own experiences. Dolly Alderton crafted a thought-provoking and emotionally engaging novel that explores the intricacies of love, friendship, and the ghosts that linger in our lives.
