I am not an American citizen, so their presidents and presidents' wives are of little interest to me. However, Barack Obama was the only American president I liked, with no reason for that. He just looked like a nice person. I did not know anything about Michelle. And I don't know if, after having read this book, I know the real Michelle, but I do like the person she described there, and I liked her story.
I hadn't planned to read this book until one of my friends criticised it without reading it for being just a dull story of no one woman who married a guy who became a president. As a feminist, I felt it was unfair of him to say that and decided to prove him wrong. And he was wrong, even though he will never know.
I had some doubts when reading about Michelle's childhood. It was a little boring. Still, since she started her new private school in her teens, I got hooked. I enjoyed every moment of reading this beautiful story of a strong and selfless woman. I am white, so I have never been an object of racism, but I am a woman, and I could feel all the things she felt; I could relate to all her worries and difficulties.
I can now say without a doubt that diminishing her story to a story of a woman who does not represent anything on her own except that she married a president is so unfair! This is not a story of her husband, ofc he is there next to her, but he is not the main character of this book; it is a story of Michelle Obama, and it is a wonderful story!5455
