“If this is how he acts when he’s sick,” said Brody, “I’d hate to see what he does when he’s feeling fine.”

When reading the book one dips into a casual life of a typical American town –allegedly a tourist paradise with miles of the vast ocean beach. But that's true only after a quick peek. The scrutiny and the enumeration of certain details the book is quite abundant with, gives us a completely different picture. We learn, for example, that in that paradise the sheriff's salary equals only to $9,000! And you have to serve min. 15years to get a salary increase up to $15 000. Which makes only 1250$ per month. That is why for the local policemen the service was quite a drag. The life of the people of the community was the same sort of a drag as well. At least before the season began to swing. And here we come to the back side of the ocean paradise. The more, the better – only one vacationer's death could frighten away the rest holidaymakers and that would be the end of the story and not the happy end at all. Why? Because the fortunes of Amity (the community name) for a whole year rested on the success or failure of those twelve brief weeks. Even with the abundance of the holidaymakers three of every ten families went on relief. Most of the people had to work for a few dollars a day. For the small money they had to shuck scallops. The reality of the "paradise" life was like this: one bad summer would nearly double the relief rolls! If every house was not rented, there wouldn't be enough work for Amity's blacks, most of whom were gardeners, butlers, bartenders, and maids. Lack of income degraded the people's life quite significantly. For example, the carpenters had ordered a load of low-grade, green wood to use in some houses. In the end the doors began to warp soon after they were installed. No crowds of holidaymakers meant no rental. In mediocre summer the $7,000–$10,000-a-season shore-front houses were not rented,and many more in the $5,000 class were without leases as well. That is why the shark-attack news might turn mediocrity into disaster. Actually the shark (the jaws) in the novel could be substituted with "COVID" word and the result would be the same! And to avoid the disaster the fact of the shark-attack was silenced and the beaches were never closed down. But on the contrary it brought even to the worse results.

So it tipped too far and one knows that when something tips too far one way or the other, awful things happen...That is the rule, unfortunately. The rule people like to disdain so much...
