Equal Rites
Terry Pratchett
Ariana_von_Kremser21 мая 2020 г.Every time I start a Terry Pratchett book, I make a grave mistake by assuming it is a book about magic or an imaginary world. It`s neither. Rather, it`s a witty exposé of the inequality in the Discworld, and - by implication - in our world.
In a universe where girls can`t be wizards, because the lore says so (though noone has seen it written anywhere), Eskarina Smith inadvertently inherits the wizard`s staff and magical powers. A virtually indestructible nine-year-old, intent on becoming a wizard and seeking her own fortune no matter what they say is instructed by Granny Weatherwax in the art of witchery. Soon they both realise Esk`s magic has a different quality, and set off for the Unseen University where Esk can be taught to master her powers... Or not - because no female has ever been a student there.
A fascinating read for the existing fans of the Discworld, I presume, with an interesting take on witches-wizards` and family relationships. Great metaphors and similes, too. Other than that personally disappointing.
