Honestly, once I tried to read this book at university, but I really couldn't. It was kind of boring and challenging for me, cuz I didn't get a word from this full-of-slang thing. Now I'm mature and actually I'm a teacher. And this kid - Holden - he stole my heart - he really did. I do sympathize with him. While he was looking for himself, doing nothing, horsing around, shooting the bull, telling about his brothers, his sis Phoebe, hating all these phony jerks etc. But apparently he's a good guy, open-hearted, and totally sensitive - that's what I like about him. I really do:
I almost wished I was dead.
I don't like old cars. I'd rather have a goddam horse. A horse is at least human.
You can't ever find a place that's nice and quiet, because there isn't any. You may think there is, but once you get there, when you're not looking, somebody will sneak up and write Fuck You right under your nose.
Don't ever tell anybody anything. If you do, you start missing everybody.
And also I like his sense of humor:
That guy Morrow was about as sensitive as a goddam toilet seat.
All you have to do to my mother is cough somewhere in the Siberia and she will hear you.
Don't say that this book is superficial, or that you didn't like Holden's vocabulary, or that this book disappointed you after reading it in English - it's not about thinking or beautiful language - that's just about feeling. That's it. Just feel it.
P.S. I've got only one question - what happens to ducks in winter???
