Equal Rites
Terry Pratchett
Annet_Q31 марта 2019 г.This book opens the series of the Discworld novels about witches. It is cozy and humorous, yet I had confusing feelings when I finished it.
The story began when wizard wanted to give his staff to newborn child who was eight son of eight son. He only made a little mistake. It turned out to be eight daughter of eight son. And a girl couldn't become a wizard. At least no one ever did before. Don't worry Granny Weatherwax would hold it.
The plot is good as usual with Prattchet stories. There is a lot of good humour as well. But in my opinion, it is another example that there are some books in Discoworld that have to be read in the right order. As it happen, I had already read some books about witches and Unseen University in Discoworld and that knowledge ruined for me half of impression of this book. Because this was the first story about witches and only third book in whole Discoworld there are some things that showed a bit different than in other books. Lancre, Unseen University has unfamiliar details and even Granny Weatherwax revealed an unexpected side of her character. The last scene of the story was what shocked me most. It showed that Granny really might have considered to have romantic relationships. It ruined for me the whole image of this character. Of course, it might have been much easier if this character had been new for me at that moment.
So it is a good story about science and about equal rights for men and women (but because it happened in the magic world, it is actually a story about equal rites for men and women:)), but to enjoy it in the whole you should better read it before other books about witches.3164
