The main thing the author wants her readers to understand is that family happiness is impossible without love. It sounds like a common knowledge and still people are inclined to make mistakes of which they have been aware beforehand. Sometimes in order to avoid making mistakes we need good examples or, to say it better experience, of other people. To my mind the brilliant characters of the novel are created for this very purpose. The story of their life teaches us to be responsible and careful with family relations. It is wrong when the man decides to marry the woman just because of his ambitions and his wish to humiliate the relatives of his future wife. The worse situation is when the girl of sixteen years old has no right to choose her husband.
According to the author’s opinion love should be the basis not only for marriage but also for upbringing of children. If we want our children to be strong and self-confident in the future we must love them, kiss them, hug them. Our warmth and support will make them protected for the rest of their life.
There are some characters in the book whom we can call vicious. We can but we may not because the author does not allow us to judge anyone. At first we learn about their drawbacks but then we are shown their ability to love, their wisdom and patience. So we realize we lack those things that those people have and develop. I’m grateful to Coleen MacCulough for so excellent a lesson of non-judging others.
However there are some items in the book which are unacceptable for me personally. Firstly, it concerns some statements about religion. I even do not want to quote them as they are quite disrespectful and sarcastic. Secondly, it concerns the plot itself, it is not right to treat the revenge, in any form and for any crime, as an honorable and admirable deed. And finally, a suicide cannot be considered as a sacrifice. I strongly believe that the author did not intend to say that there were any situations which could be excuses for killing oneself.
Generally the novel is worth reading. I recommend young ladies and young mothers to read it.51,1K
