Young poets imitated or parodied him, and by now Londoners had shortened his name to 'Will' and his main rival to 'Ben' -- a curtailing later deplored by Thomas Heywood.
Mellifluous Shakespeare, whose enchanting quill Commanded mirth or passion, was but Will.
