Each became a political exile, rejected the church, never attained a single final style but always grew through new styles, mixed the ancient and the contemporary in astonishing ways, never flinched from what audiences might find shocking, and, by the example of creative life and work, served to define the modern era. And the three were almost exact contemporaries, born within a few months of each other.
