In Finnegans Wake--serialized as Work in Progress--Joyce departed from the political, mechanical, and spontaneous elements which characterized both Dada and Ulysses; he arrived at a different scale which had much in common with Surrealism in its use of dream language to pursue the quest for universal history and myth. In Joyce's words substance and style were inseparable, and the transfiguration and metamorphosis of language through punning, compression, and polyphony became both the subject and the purpose of writing.
