The pillowcase is then ripped off, and it feels good to breathe in the open air, to have his full vision. A dozen or more women, still fully armed, some with children and some without, huddle around them. Bradwell, now hoodless too, is kneeling beside him. He looks flushed and dazed. Partridge tucks his chin to his chest, trying to hide his unmarked face. He whispers to Bradwell, “Was this the plan?” “I think we’re close,” he says. “Really?” Partridge says. “Close to what? Death?”
