Most of the book is quite slow and may feel like it drags. There are tiny droplets of hints and details all over it that turn into an avalanche by the end. Seeing them finally fit into their places in the puzzle is extremely satisfying but it takes a while to get there.
At times it also feels like there are too many mysteries: What’s with Lee? What’s with his roommate? What’s with his mother? What’s with the house? What’s with Sen? What’s with her dad? Is it ghosts, time travel, magic, all of the above? It is not exactly confusing but feels like there are way more questions than answers for a while.
But the answers do come. Things unravel - or come together - at the end in a spectacular way. Two vastly different characters connect in a multitude of ways. The answer to “what exactly happened?” is ambiguous but oh so heartbreaking.
I had some doubts at the beginning but the more I read the better it got and the ending was well worth it. It is not very scary but quite dramatic and pretty unique.
