Apparently, cozy horror is a genre and, apparently, I really like it. It’s only a second cozy horror book I’ve read though (both were 5 stars, btw) so I guess we’ll see.
I really liked the setting in this book and the spirits and their lore. It’s not particularly rich but it was enough, and I liked the idea of how the spirits come to life.
I liked Selena and related hard to her life unraveling after the death of a family member. She escapes from the rational of the city and her partner to the irrational of this particular spot in the desert and a whole cast of diverse characters. I really liked Grandma Billy and the priest who also believes in spirits, and Copper is of course the goodest of all good girls.
The found family aspect is done great in this book. It is also about loneliness and kindness.
Overall, an unexpectedly wholesome and heartwarming book with not very horrifying but still decent creepy vibes.
