This wasn't too bad but it wasn't really good either.
The coolest thing in this book is the main concept: the villain kidnaps people to act out scenes from her past as some form of working through trauma or regaining control or something. But the concept doesn't get developed in any satisfactory way.
There is very little actual acting out. Just a few random scenes that aren't really about anything and kind of meh. The titular final scene (if you can call it that because there isn't really any acting out either) is very anticlimactic.
The villain is very inconsistent. She wants to act things out and then she doesn't. She wants "young Grace" to be 9 but then "young Grace" is supposed to be getting married. The villain is attracted to the guy playing her father but is then appalled when he pretends to reciprocate.
And we don't get any real explanations behind her actions. What was the trauma? What eventually led to her kidnapping people? The explanation that she just wants to control things or that she is just cray is boringly vague.
The way the villain controls Mitch and the police and gets away with stuff is explained similarly vaguely: "well, she's rich, soooo....".
The enemies-to-lovers-ish relationship between the victims feels forced and unnecessary. I get that there is trauma bonding (and possibly trauma banging), but it didn't seem to contribute anything significant or interesting to the story.
I also didn't really care for Mina. Her storyline gets more interesting as we find out how everything is connected but at the beginning it is very meh.
Overall, it is a short and easy read but there is nothing really memorable except for the initial concept.
