Summers End

“Summer always ends,” she agreed. “But it’ll return on schedule. Like clockwork. And meanwhile, we have the rest of the year to enjoy.”

Always question why someone tells you something. Because sometimes even when they tell you the truth, their reasons might not be exactly pure.

You know, it’s a common failing of academics, and indeed all creatures, that the brightest object gets all the attention, leaving so much else ignored.

Journalism favored those who weren’t afraid to step up and ask questions. While some might call this fine attribute “pushiness,” Vera preferred to think of it as “spunk.”

“We don’t need tragedies, BW. We need curiosity,” Vera told him. “A story about…I don’t know, a boating contest…can be just as gripping as a murder. It’s all in the way it’s written.”
