We are different people in different languages. In Japanese, it's hard to be direct or sarcastic. In English, there's so much less nuance and allusion. Even my body changes.
Japanese feels like a jungle gym, full of levels and structure that you have to reach through carefully.

If you love something, let it go; if it loves you, it will come back,’ I quote from whatever fridge magnet I read that saying on. It doesn’t have quite the same ring to it in Japanese.
She gives me an extremely sceptical look. ‘Nonsense. A person can leave and still love you. Sometimes people go to places they must stay. Sometimes coming back is not what is right. Don’t judge love with a rule like that.’
