Well, it looks like South-american literature grows on its own tree and doesn't have much in common with many other parts of the world. I found that Simpatia has a common vibe with Roberto Bolano's novels, also the main character's name Ulises shares it with the one from Bolano's The Savage Detectives. The only characteristic in all the chaos of the novel which is recognisable is the way how all non-democratic countries operate. You can only achieve anything in life if you know right people or do a favour to those. This could be a dramatic story, when talented and hard-working people don't get recognition and could be abused, but in this case this is a somewhat happy story of a mediocre movie fan, who inherits a decent property just because of complex relationships in the family of his ex-wife.
Ah, yes, the book is kind of about dogs, e.g. about almost mythical creature, Simon Bolivar's giant dog.

Что ж интересно. Хитро, умно, интригующе. Знает, что делать этот мужчина. Ну уж неужели ты думаешь, что сделав дело тебе перепадёт такое. Надо бросить монету не находишь?
