It was in 1975 that the Khmer Rouge seized power in Kampuchea and instituted a reign of terror and brutality that shocked the world. Cities were emptied, and the entire population forced to work in the countryside. Thousands of former government officials and army officers were massacred. Hundreds of thousands died of malnutrition and disease. Every crime was punishable by death.
