As I reread it for a final time, it occured to me that we are all unreliable narrators of our own lives, crafting stories about ourselfs that omit unsavory truths and highlight out invented identitites.

I could almoust hear Mummy's voice in my head when I asked her advice - even more strident than usual - about the trip: A wife's duty to be with her husband, because her husband must come first, even before her children. If a wife leaves her husband alone for too long, she will lose him.

"Oh, I know that, Mama", she answered, all confidence and assurance. "After all, Papa likes me, but he doesn't much like you."
