At a recent ultra, when first-time 100-mile runner Alex was asked this question, she told her mom, “Do not ask me if I am okay.” Have you ever watched a child fall, and they are fine until you ask, “Are you okay?” Then the tears come out and they are not okay. Some ultrarunners are like that. They are fine until you allow them to think they are not fine. So, knowing your runner and what works (and doesn’t work) will probably make your interaction with your runner less stressful and more productive.

I reminded her how many people probably walked no farther than from their couch to their refrigerator while she completed 80 grueling, miserable miles. Not finishing a race is not equivalent to failure.
