'Nolan's 14 takes place in the mountains. The mountainous landscape is very beautiful and there is a constant reward for the physical suffering. In the Barkley there is no reward. The Barkley is a pure "mindfuck" that plays out in your head. Nolan's 14 is an external experience, the Barkley is an internal experience.'

We feel uncomfortable if we are even just a tiny bit too hot or cold. We feel hungry if we can't eat at that particular point in time, and if we have to walk somewhere, we usually call someone to give us a lift. Ultrarunners respond to this state of permanent comfort by seeking out discomfort every now and again to determine who or what they are.

Laz also has a controversial opinion on the need for food in long-distance running. 'You don't have to eat to run,' he said in an article in The Bitter Southerner on the Barkley. 'That's an old wives' tale. We were designed for feast and famine. Most people who have ever lived have been hungry most of the time. There's either plenty or there's nothing.'
