Exciting Times

Look, I’d say, it’s like English grammar. It doesn’t make sense but it’s too late to change it.

‘You still haven’t told me if you like girls,’ she said.

I said: ‘There’s lots of things I don’t tell people.’

‘I like talking to you,’ I said – quite stupidly, I realised. ‘It makes me feel solid, like someone can confirm I’m real.’

I felt spending time with him would make me smarter, or would at least prepare me to talk about currencies and indices with the serious people I would encounter in the course of adult life.

I don’t think you’re interested in having a nice life. Which is arrogant, really, because you expect other people to help you maintain an existence that you yourself can’t work up any enthusiasm over.
