I hope Andy is there.
I hope I can cross the border.
I hope to see my friend and shake his hand.
I hope the Pacific is as blue as it has been un my dreams.
I hope.

But it isn't just a paper that makes a man. And it isn't a prison that breaks one, either.

I was hoping for the best and expecting the worst.

Suddenly it was Andy who had the power. Hadley had the gun, and his friend Greg Stammas was behind him, and the whole prison administration was behind Stammas, and the whole state was behind that, but suddenly in that golden sunshine it didn't matter. But it was Andy who has the power.

In spite of the problems, he was going on with his life. There are thousands of people who don't or won't or can't do it, and most of them are not in prison.
